Candidate Comment

I, and my husband Frank, have two daughters ages 12 and 6 years attending the Dunn Middle School and Thorpe Elementary. I have earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education with 20 years of professional experience in the field as a teacher, administrator, recruiter and communications director. I currently own "Solutions" a marketing and design agency focusing on small businesses.

I am actively involved in the Danvers community volunteering at many levels. Those efforts include: Member of the School Department's Five Year Plan Steering Committee, Vice President of DEEP (Danvers Educational Enrichment Partnership), Co-Chairman of PACE (Parents and Administration Communicate for Education), Marketing Consultant on the school system's development of teacher recruitment/communication materials, and active member of the Thorpe and Middle School PAC's.

Throughout my 20 years working in education, I have always marveled at the accomplishments and successes children can reach. Being a trusted partner in that process has been a rewarding and valuable experience. It is this dedication that draws me to serve on the Danvers School Committee.

In my various roles as teacher, administrator, and director of (education) communications, I have been responsible for developing programs that positively influence the lives of students and their families.

The biggest challenge facing our community right now is the Middle and High School building project. We know that both facilities are antiquated and in dire need of upgrades in order to serve our students adequately. I understand the Danvers educational system, and am committed to providing facilities, which are both affordable and supportive of our town's educational standards.

Furthermore, teacher recruitment and retention are strongly affected by this building issue. Adequate school facilities are a key factor in attracting and retaining the most talented teachers. I believe that my experience as a teacher recruiter/trainer will be invaluable as the School Committee joins with school administration in FY03 to work on this plan.

I am also committed to finding creative financial resources for our schools. During these more difficult economic times, this is challenge and an exciting opportunity.

Navigating our school system through the issues we currently face will take strong leadership. It requires a School Committee that has a detailed understanding of these complex issues. It also requires one that is willing to view the issues from various perspectives and to communicate openly to find solutions. I am a proven leader, with proven communication skills. I am also well versed in the issues facing the Danvers School System.

We have many challenges facing the schools right now. I look forward to turning these challenges into wonderful opportunities for our children. Please vote Jean McCartin for Danvers School Committee on May 7th. Thank you.
